Not too often does a potential groom arrange for a camera crew and photographer to be there when he pops the question, but in the case of Alex and Samantha that is exactly how it went down. We will post the whole story in pictures later on, but for here are a few portraits that we made after she said yes:

A Year in Review - Competatively

So to cap off a great year in business, Julie has encouraged me to make a blog post that highlights our award-winning images from the past year. We compete at local state and national levels with our images in order to improve our craft. Competition gives you unbiased criticism of your work from qualified judges and also enables you to see the other outstanding work that is being done in the industry. So without further ado I will show you some of the images and tell you what they won.

This first image titled "Invincible" won a merit from the Professional Photographers of America(PPA) and was accepted in to the PPA loan collection. Out of between 5 and 7 thousand images from all over the world, the PPA judges select around 500 to be a part of the Loan Collection each year.

This second image titled "Unbalanced" received a merit from the PPA and also won first place for portrait of a man at the Florida Professional Photographers annual convention and print competition. This convention is very special to Florida Photographers because you get to mingle and exchange ideas with your friends and colleagues from all over the state.

This next image titled "Survivor" is very special to Julie and I because it was created during a Flashes of Hope shoot at Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital. Flashes of Hope is an organization that brings together professional photographers with the families of children with cancer to create uplifting portraits for those families. This image received a merit at the FPP Convention and Competition as well as a PPA merit at the national competition and was accepted in to the PPA Showcase Collection which is printed as a hard-bound volume and distributed nationally each year.

Julie's image titled "All Eyes on Me" was a candid shot at a wedding for our dear friends and clients Chris and Lauren. I love this because I feel like it captures that one breathless second when everyone turns around to see the bride. This image won 1st place for photojournalism at the Professional Photographers Society of Central Florida (PPSCF) competition in November.

We captured this image titled "Here Comes the Bride" (totally original title right?) at a wedding we photographed in New Jersey. The little bridesmaid was very excited about her big job that day. This image won 2nd place for photojournalism at the PPSCF November competition.

This is one of those moments you can't plan and one of my favorite images that Julie has ever made. "Glee" won a merit at the FPP competition over the summer and was Julie's first entry in to state competition. This bride, Amanda was captured having a moment of pure glee with her mom right after the wedding ceremony.

"Goooaaaal" is one of those images, unlike "Glee" that requires a lot of setup and several tries to capture. With multiple lights firing and a subject upside-down in mid air, it's easy to see why this image of Julie's received a merit at the PPSCF competition in November and also won 1st place in PPSCF people's choice competition.

We will keep learning and competing so that the quality of our work is always improving. Our clients will always know that we are always working hard to make the most beautiful and meaningful images possible for them. Hopefully 2011 will bring us even more success in competition, we'll be sure to keep you posted.

Holiday Portrait Preview 2010 - Orlando Family Portraits

It's all about the holiday portraits this time of year and we have been busy with 'em. Here is a quick look at some of the portraits we have been doing the past couple of weeks. What Do Our Wedding Albums Look Like? I'm Glad You Asked

One of our favorite parts of shooting weddings is getting the final album ready to deliver to the newlyweds. In the age of digital photography it is easy to forget how beautiful finished prints and albums are. We were packing up Neil and Devin's album to ship to them and I took a few pictures to blog.

The outside wrapping and ribbon is made of recycled material and protects the album from dust and stuff. Plus it looks super fancy.

This cover is an orange suede called "Hollywood Orange". The 11x14 flush mount album and the 5.5x7 mini album have the same cover options. We made this one for ourselves so that we had our own copy to keep!

The mini album is an exact copy of the big book just smaller and press printed instead of chemical. They make great gifts for parents and grandparents.

The hinges are made to lay flat so they won't wear out.

Our album designs are simple and rely on the strength of big, beautiful images laid out cleanly to tell the story of a wedding.

When you get one of these bad boys in your hand it's hard to imagine why anybody would just want a disc with images on it. Those always end up in a shoe box or hard drive limbo. An album like this is something that you will cherish your whole life and pass on to your children. It's easy to lose site of quality and craftsmanship in an age where we can check our email from anywhere and talk to each other wirelessly by beaming phone calls in to outer space. Those things are definitely awesome, but it is important to remember that some of the best things in life take a little time, cost a little more money and last a whole lot longer.

We Traveled down to South Florida for the fantastic wedding of Neil and Devin, and it was worth the drive. They had some of the coolest accessories we've seen at a wedding. Our Big, Fat Colorado Vacation

Well we just got back from our amazing trip to Colorado and we are exhausted. We need a vacation from our vacation but unfortunately it's right back to work. Before we do that, however, we wanted to post some images from our trip.

We had a blast with our friends out there and wanted to give a HUGE thank you to Beau, Gil, Joe, Bill, Larry, Amy, Grant, Paul and Linda. We couldn't have had a trip as great as this without you. I hope that we can return the favor in the future!

Baby Tyler and the Jefferson's - Orlando Family Portraits

It's amazing how fast little ones grow, and we have been watching little Tyler since just a few days after he was born. The Jefferson family came in to the studio for Tyler's 4 month session and to get a family portrait for their Christmas card. Since Julie is the baby whisperer, she took charge and made some beautiful portraits of Tyler in the studio, and since I am the grown-up whisperer, I made the family shots outside. We had a great session with Laura this week! She is an actress and is moving out to L.A. to get in to the movie business out there. Before moving she wanted to get some new headshots to take out there with her, so she was recommended to us by the beautiful and talented Lauren O'Quinn. If you have never been to a Fleming's Steakhouse, you are definitely missing out. They just opened a new location in Dr. Philips a couple weeks ago, and as is their policy, they decided to get some executive portraits taken of the managing partner and the chef partner. That's where we came in. In addition to Marc the gracious managing partner and Nate the incredibly talented chef partner, we also got to include Andrea, the beautiful private dining director in to the session.

Mini Sessions 3 - Headshots Downtown Orlando

This weekend was the third ever Mini Sessions promotion. We had a sell out crowd and it was so hot outside...(how hot was it?). It was so hot that the birds had to use potholders to pull worms out of the ground! Zing!

The Warped Tour

If you know me and Julie for any length of time, you might know that one of our hobbies is photographing live music, and one of the biggest live music events of the year in Orlando is the Van's Warped Tour. This year we were lucky enough to get some photo passes thanks to our friends the A.K.A.'s and Streetlight Manifesto and we got some awesome images of the bands doing their thing. It was ridiculously hot all day and there were some really strange folks in some really strange clothes but we had a blast anyway!

Senior Portraits in Orlando

So we haven't been posting quite as often as we normally do, but there is a great reason for that: we have been really busy! Between our big BBQ, traveling out of town and sessions we have been going non stop. We are taking a nice, peaceful weekend to catch up on all the image processing and put the finishing touches on our new website.

A Brief Absence

Hey everybody, I just wanted to throw out a quick post today to let everybody know what's going on with us,

Just finished the mini sessions this weekend and we're spending the next two days getting ready to launch some big big changes to the website and the blog.

Besides the mini sessions this weekend we have been having some awesome sessions with seniors and we have a bunch more next week. Check back with us in the next few days for some images from all the sessions from the last couple of weeks (it's gonna be a huge post)!

We are running some great specials for high school senior portraits in June and July, and we will have more in formation on that coming very soon.

"How much Photoshop do you do?"

We have decided this week to pick a topic for our blog post and use this forum to start answering some questions that we get almost everyday from clients. Our headshot clients are always asking us about retouching and how much we do to our images. The answer is "not much".

It is important to get the image the way you want it in the camera by doing things from using good lighting to having a good makeup artist on hand. For commercial and theatrical headshots, the following things are important:

1. That your headshots look like you and not your super model brother or sister.
2. That your headshots look natural.

You don't want to go in to a casting and have the casting director look from your headshot to you and go "Ummmm...I want the girl that is in the picture...can you go get her for me?"

Here are a couple of examples of our retouching for recent clients:

In this image we used some extra lighting from off to the side to create a nice direction to the light that still looked natural. When we pulled the image up on the computer, we used photoshop to increase the color a little, brighten up the eyes sharpen it and darken down the background a little to draw attention to her beautiful face. Most importantly she still looks natural and exactly like the same person:

In this next image, we were shooting outside again, and just like before we used some extra studio lighting to give the light a natural look and direction. The client in this image, Jean, takes really good care of his skin as you can see so there weren't really many blemishes to remove, but like lots of us hard workers he had some dark circles under his eyes. We lightened those circles up a little and used photoshop to boost the color and contrast of the image, sharpen it and darken the background.

Getting the image right in the camera is the photographer's job, and using too much photoshop can make the image look fake or "airbrushed". For some types of photography, like band promos and commercial advertising, lots of image enhancement is not only a good thing, but it's expected in the industry, but for commercial and theatrical headshots, that's not the case. Here are your tips this week for preparing for your headshots:

1. Take care of your face: get a facial four or five days ahead of time and get in to some kind of skin care regiment. If you are an actor, your face is what gets you work so take care of it.

2. Get a professional make-up artist for your session. If your friend is just "so totally awesome at make up stuff" run for your life. A professional make-up artist knows how to make you look your best while still looking natural. Getting makeup for headshots is totally different than getting makeup done to go out clubbing. Most men can get away without a makeup artist, but we do recommend that you guys get a good powder to keep your shiny foreheads at bay.

3. Know your demographic (young moom, street thug, girl next door) and make sure to bring clothes to your session that will enforce those looks for you. And remember that you can probably pull of several different looks so plan ahead and bring lots of choices.

That's it for now, we are going to have a ton of stuff to show all you guys in the next couple of weeks, we have a ton of photo shoots planned as well as a BBQ for all our clients this summer (shhhhh....don't tell Julie I told you).

Yesterday was a perfect summer day here in Orlando, and like lots of other folks on a day like this we took the operation outside to the park. Chante, Karl and Gillian came out with us for a family/maternity session and we were able to capture some really beautiful moments of their family. Summer is here and that means that juniors become seniors and young men and women all over the country will be graduating high school and getting ready to go to college. What does this have to do with us? Senior pictures!

We had Mary in the studio with us this week and she was awesome! We did some really fun pictures in the studio and then we put on that old prom dress and went out in to the rain to grab some shots.

Sharnell and Jean

Canadian Trampoline Expert?

We are always excited here at HF headquarters to get the opportunity to do something new and exciting that we haven't done before. In the case of our new friend Adam we couldn't have even made it up that we got to do something so cool.

Adam is a professional trampolinist, gymnast and acrobat from Canada. We got together with him to create some artistic photos for his portfolio and to show in still form the extent of what he can do. We had a great time making these images and I have to say that my favorite part was dragging a big trampoline around downtown Orlando so that we could get pictures of him in mid-air.

*except for the first image, all of them were taken while adam was flying through the air in our studio and outside...yes he is a little crazy.

Christina and Bryan Sneak Preview

Christina and Bryan got married this weekend and it was one of the most beautiful weddings we've ever seen. It was emotional, simple and honest. Since we started specializing in headshots for actors and models (in addition to weddings and portraits), we haven't had the opportunity too often to photograph many child actors. Normal kids have lots of energy, but actors are like normal kids with after-burners!

Rachael was so energetic and fun during our session, we laughed like crazy a few times over things she said and we had a great time doing it. Besides being hilarious, she is a black belt and one heck of a dancer. Good luck Rachael we loved having you and your awesome (definitely-not-a-stage-mom) mom in the studio this week.

We had an amazing session with Ian downtown this week. He is an actor and comedian from right here in town and you can catch his act at the SAK Comedy Lab. Flashes of Hope

Last week we had the amazing experience of working with Flashes of Hope, "a non-profit organization dedicated to creating uplifting portraits of children fighting cancer and other life threatening illnesses." The idea is to help these brave and beautiful children deal with their changing appearance and to create images that the families can always cherish.

We started the day early (early for us) at 8:30am at the Florida Hospital in Winter Park and spent the day there photographing 10 familes. We were joined by the amazing stylists from About Face who volunteered their time to make everyone look amazing, and what a fantastic job they did! Things moved so quickly, and the families were so loving and joyful that it was almost easy to forget where we were. I wish that I could put the whole gallery of images here for everyone to see what an amazing group of strong and lovely people they all are, but there are only room for some of our favorite captures from the day. A Man and His Dog

We have been working with a lot of musicians lately, but I have to say that this instance was a rare treat for us. Chris is an incredibly talented, classical guitarist, and you don't often see someone perform with the kind of passion and skill as he does.

The Real Prince Charming

That's right ladies, Prince Charming is real and he is in our studio. Stepehen here is an actor and entertainer from right here in Orlando, and guess what he does for a living? He spends his days dancing in front of a big castle with princesses and life-sized cartoon characters.
